BCCI is looking forward to conduct the mini IPL in the month of September, 2016. As talks are going on in the BCCI committee, the venues and dates are yet to be finalized. But India will not host the mini IPL 2016. It will be scheduled overseas that’s for sure. But BCCI needs to look at the various aspects before finalizing the venues.
BCCI President Anurag Thakur said the final dates and format will be declared very soon. There are certain issues which need to be sorted out. The questions like How many number of teams will participate? Who will host the first mini IPL 2016? Which are the Franchises? Who will take broadcasting rights?
Currently Sony owns the broadcasting rights of IPL till 2017. For mini IPL 2016, perhaps star will take the broadcasting rights as it is considered as the strong contender. Star holds the rights of home series now but it will look to bag the overseas mini IPL 2016 rights.
Talking about the venues, two options seem to be prominient. First one is USA and other one is UAE. As media asked BCCI President Anurag Thakur about the venue, he did not commit about the venue. However he said “There are many options, many countries to host the first mini IPL 2016. But we need to choose best one. So there will be a process to look at the various time zones, various markets available and which could be the best partner country, whether every year it can hosted at same venue or the countries can be changed.”
Anurag Thakur also said “ It is a tight schedule. We need organize in less than two weeks window. We have to look into various details, which country we can play in, who will be the broadcaster, how many players should participate, what about sponsors – all these issues need to deliberated, but we are keen to play in that window”
