Couple of mistakes from Indian goal keeper P R Sreejesh and India lost to Belgium by 1-2 in Men’s Hockey Championship Trophy 2016. On Monday Belgian players scored two times through captain Sreejesh’s legs at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre. In reply India managed to score only one goal.
India slid down to third position in the points table due to this lose against Belgium. Australia tops the table at the moment. India and Great Britain are having 4 points but Great Britain hold the number 2 spot as they are ahead in number of goals scored. Belgium, with this win, rose to 4th spot and South Korea and Germany are at 5th and 6th spot respectively.
In first half no team could score goal. Both teams fought well. The first goal of the match came at 25th minute when Indian skipper PR Sreejesh made an error. In the penalty corner hit by Hendrickx which went through the legs of PR Sreejesh was the first goal for Great Britain. After 5 minutes India came back strongly when Devindar scored only goal for India. The scores leveled at 1-1.
Both teams were fighting hard to take the lead and in the process Great Britain won the battle. They scored another with another error from captain PR Seejesh at 44th minute of the match. They took the lead and score board showed the lead 2-1. Thereafter India tried hard to come back but Great Britain dominated rest of the match and maintained pressure on India. Apart from those couple of mistakes from Indian captain, Indian defence was strong as they saved many penalty corner hits.
Still India have hopes and can perform better. On Tuesday India will face South Korea. In other clashes Austarlia will take on Belgium and Germany will be facing the hosts.
