LAHORE: Former captain Azhar Ali has reportedly decided to quit all Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responsibilities, including his position on the national men’s selection committee and his role as the Head of Youth Development, local media reported on Tuesday.

He took charge as a member of the national selection committee in October 2024, joining former Test cricketer Aqib Javed and former ICC elite umpire Aleem Dar. The trio joined the panel alongside Asad Shafiq, who was already serving on it.

When Azhar came, Pakistan was struggling from an innings defeat in the Multan Test against England.

The newly appointed team made some bold decisions, including the exclusion of stars like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah from the remaining two Tests of the series.

Their tactics made headlines but ultimately paid off as Pakistan bounced back to clinch the series by 2-1.

Azhar Ali was then handed another important responsibility in November 2024, when he was appointed as the Head of Youth Development following a formal recruitment process.

His responsibilities included overseeing grassroots structures, designing long-term development pathways and shaping talent progression from junior to elite levels.

It is pertinent to mention that the PCB has not yet provided an official statement on Azhar’s resignation or the reasons behind it.

Azhar Ali represented Pakistan at the international level from 2010 to 2022, earning 97 Test and 53 ODI caps.

He was also part of the Pakistan squad that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 and had the honour of captaining the national team in nine Tests and 31 ODIs.
