Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi is set to return to first-class cricket in the upcoming President’s Trophy Grade-I, according to reports.
The left-arm quick could make his first red-ball appearance for domestic side Khan Research Laboratries (KRL) in several years. His previous outing in the format came back in 2017 during the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy while playing for KRL.
Shaheen had stayed away from red-ball cricket mainly due to his packed international schedule and workload concerns. His return was viewed as a timely step to regain rhythm in longer format, especially as Pakistan looked beyond him for Test assignments.
The 24-year-old had remained central to Pakistan’s pace attack, but recent performances had raised questions about consistency. Playing in the President’s Trophy will give him extended spells and better control, something missing from his bowling after early days. It could also help him rebuild confidence with the red ball.
Reports indicated that his participation would add quality to the tournament, which continued to serve as a key platform for domestic talent. The competition, featuring departmental sides, had historically played a role in preparing players for international cricket.

The reports further suggested that the Pakistan ODI captain, who recently led Pakistan Gold to the title victory at the inaugural National Champions Cup by defeating Shadab Khan’s Pakistan Greens in the final, will also represent KRL in the President’s Cup.
Originally scheduled for August, the departmental List-A domestic tournament was pushed back to December following the national selection committee’s request and the white-ball team management, who felt that players needed adequate rest after the National Champions Cup.
The President’s Cup, contested by the same eight departments that will feature in the first-class edition of the President’s Trophy, has served as the standalone List-A competition in Pakistan’s men’s domestic calendar over the past two seasons.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) abolished the Pakistan Cup after the 2023-24 season, leaving the President’s Cup as the primary 50-over domestic competition.
If finalized, Shaheen Afridi return might prove beneficial for both player and selectors. Consistent performances in domestic cricket were seen as crucial for him to rediscover form and strengthen his position in Pakistan’s Test setup.
