LONDON: World number one Jannik Sinner dominated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-final of Wimbledon here at Centre Court on Friday, to set up Sunday’s final against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

At least one of Sinner and Alcaraz, the two stars of men’s tennis, has appeared in the singles final of the last six Grand Slam tournaments.

Sinner, who is set to play in the first Wimbledon final, will be looking to avenge the painful French Open final defeat against Alcaraz in the ongoing season.

Djokovic, who was bidding to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight men’s Wimbledon crowns, has failed to reach the final at the All England Club for the first time since 2017.

The 23-year-old outplayed the Serb in the opening two sets, but the 38-year-old tried to make a comeback in the third. However, the Italian won five games in a row to set up the blockbuster final against Alcaraz.

“It’s a huge honour for me to share the court again with Carlos,” said the Italian start after knocking out the seven-time champion.

“Hopefully it will be a good match like the last one – I don’t know if it will be better because I don’t know if that’s possible but we will try – hopefully it will be an enjoyable match.”

The Italian tennis star has now claimed the last six clashes against Djokovic, but this was his first victory against the legend on grass.

“It’s a tournament I always watched when I was young on the television and I would have never imagined that I can play here, you know in the finals, so it was amazing,” said Sinner.

“From my side, I served very well today, I felt great on court, I was moving really well today.

“We saw in the third set that he was a bit injured. He’s been in a very difficult situation but I tried to stay calm, to play the best tennis I can.”

Meanwhile, defending champion Alcaraz defeated American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(6) to reach his third straight Wimbledon final.

Alcaraz said that he is proud of himself for staying calm and thinking clearly.

“It was a really difficult match to play against Taylor, really happy with everything I have done today. I’m really proud about the way that I stayed calm and then thinking clearly,” he said.
