Pakistan hockey team not to travel to India for Asia Cup: reports

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has decided against sending the national hockey team to India for the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup, due to growing political tensions and serious security concerns, sources reported on Friday.

According to government sources, Pakistan has always supported the view of keeping sports and politics separate. However, officials claim that India has politicised the situation, creating a tense and unwelcoming environment, particularly for Pakistani athletes travelling there.

“Indian media has launched a relentless smear campaign against Pakistan, while extremist groups are openly issuing threats to our players through various social media platforms,” said an unnamed government source.

“Given the current geopolitical climate and the rising risks to player safety, sending the team to India is simply not a viable option,” the source added.

Sources further said that ultra-nationalist organisations like RSS, which have strong connections with India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have allegedly boosted the threats against members of the Pakistan hockey team through social media.

“It’s miserable. Despite Pakistan’s efforts to keep sports above politics, India has repeatedly politicised sporting events. In this environment, the safety and dignity of our athletes cannot be assured,” the source said.

Sources added that there are also inconsistencies in Indian media, as initial reports from India had indicated that the Indian government had granted permission to the Pakistan hockey team to participate. Still, the same press started aggressive commentary, which further deepened the concerns.

The Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to be held in Rajgir, India, from August 27 to September 7.

For context, Pakistan last toured India in 2023 for the Asian Champions Trophy, ranking fifth among six teams, with the home team winning the title.
